“What’s your favourite quote and why?” – #bloganuaryday22prompt

Since I struggle to give you my all time favourite quotes, I made a top three list. These are only those from books I read this past year.

#3

“[…] I can so clearly distinguish between the criminal and his crime, I can sincerely forgive the first while I abhor the last; with this creed, revenge never worries my heart, degradation never too deeply disgusts me; injustice never crushes me too low; I live in calm, looking to the end.”

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë

I really like this quote because it reminds me to be a forgiving person. In Jane Eyre, it’s actually Helen who says this to Jane. Jane’s method to answer violence with violence, to not forgive quickly, especially her aggressors in her early childhood. To judge and never to forget are things I tend to do and it’s not very healthy. So I thought a lot about this quote and actually started my quote journal with it ^^.

#2

“There are just some kind of men who – who’re so busy worrying about the next world they’ve never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.”

To kill a mockingbird, Harper Lee

I love this quote and I really loved this book. It’s been a few months since I read the book, so I don’t remember the exact context in which this quote was said. Anyhow, I find it fits my views about spirituality and religion very well. I understand that people want to know what comes after their existence. It’s a totally fair thing to wonder about. But shouldn’t the priority lay in this life, in this existence?

“If we only fell in love with people who were were perfect for us, he said, then there wouldn’t be so much fuss about love in the first place.”

Rules of Civility, Amor Towles

I don’t think a quote ever soothed me as much as this. It relieves me a lot to know that I’m not the only one who struggles with love. Something that isn’t perfect, that has sparkle because of it. In my eyes perfect would be boring and therefore not worth the “fuss”.

Have you read any of these books? If yes, what were your favourite parts or quotes?
